The Texas Initiative
Crisis
As COVID-19 started to spread in the southern states, we really didn’t know how severe it was going to affect us and our way of life.
Problem
State officials were not quick to respond to the need of the people as far as PPE and there was a clear need for help.
Solution
I helped co-found The Texas Mask Initative to help aid marginalized communities across Texas attain the proper PPE for free.
Who is The Texas Mask Initiative (TMI) ?
Founded in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Texas Mask Initiative works to provide communities across Texas with masks.
We are a collective of Latinx Texans working to support our communities.
We are Creatives, Organizers, 1st gen, Loud, & Sin Verguenzas
How did we distribute and to who?
We worked alongside non-profits across Texas that include: El Paso Child Crisis Center, Las Ventanas de Socorro Nursing Home, Chorpus Christi Mutual Aid Group, URGE Texas, and many others. The non-profits would then coordiante when to distribute to the communities they serve.

TMI Team
There was a total of 4 sewers including myself and we would cover orders by region, we were spread out across Texas including Houston, El Paso, and San Antonio.
We also had a development coordinator as well as a social media coordinator to keep interest, give information to the public, and run things smoothly.
La Vida Local Awardee
TMI decided that if we are to continue helping we needed a little help. We applied to be grant recipients of Mi Jente’s La Vida Local project.

We met our goal! 🎊
The Texas Mask Initiative created over 1200 masks for places all across Texas including, El Paso, The Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston. Overall, TMI generated over $2,500 in donations/funding and got to be a help to the community.
